Tulane University announced on March 20 that its sailing teams will travel this weekend to participate in two separate regattas. The coed team is set to compete at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race in Norfolk, Virginia, while the women’s crew will race at the Blaire Herron Memorial Women’s Team Race in Washington, D.C.
These events are important opportunities for Tulane’s sailors to test their skills against strong competition from across the country. Both regattas feature multiple top collegiate programs and varied racing formats that will be determined by each event’s chair based on conditions and time.
At the Aaron Szambecki Team Race, Tulane will be one of ten teams competing on the Elizabeth River. Other participating schools include Georgetown, George Washington, Fordham, Eckerd, Navy, Rhode Island, Stanford, Dartmouth, and host Old Dominion. Racing is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:45 a.m. Central Time on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. The format may include a round robin followed by seeded rounds or another structure as decided by organizers.
Meanwhile, the women’s team will join seven other schools at the Blaire Herron Memorial Women’s Team Race hosted by Georgetown University. Competitors include Hobart and William Smith Colleges, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Navy, Old Dominion, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Georgetown. Races are set for 9 a.m. Central Time Saturday and 8:45 a.m. Sunday at either the Washington Sailing Marina Lagoon or Potomac River. The format options range from double round robins with finals to single round robins depending on time constraints.
Live results for both regattas will be available online through dedicated links provided by Tulane Athletics.
Looking ahead, these competitions offer valuable experience as Tulane continues its spring season against some of the nation’s leading collegiate sailing programs.
