Tulane swimming ranks 18th after two days at National Invitational Championships

The Tulane swimming team is ranked 18th out of 52 teams after the first two days of the National Invitational Championships, according to a March 14 update from the team. The event is being held at the FAST Facility in Ocala, Florida.

The team’s standing comes after several individual and relay performances. Sophomore Lise Coetzee finished 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.69. Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou placed 15th in the 400 individual medley (4:20.23), while Gwen Shahboz took ninth in the same event (4:23.80).

In relay events, Marin Shimkus, Paula Gaya Bisquerra, Eliza Lennox, and Nicole Fant earned an 18th-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.48. The team of Shahboz, Coetzee, Mary Kate Kupsky, and Phoebe Johnson finished 29th in the 800 freestyle relay (7:35.49).

Other notable results include Shimkus finishing as Tulane’s top swimmer in the preliminaries of the 100 backstroke at 35th place (55.60), Bisquerra placing 27th in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.08), and Lennox taking 21st in the 100 butterfly (55.11).

The competition continues on Saturday with preliminaries for several events starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by finals at 5 p.m., including relays and distance freestyle races.
