The Tulane track and field program will split its squad for two separate competitions this weekend, with athletes heading to both Texas and California for a series of meets, according to an April 15 announcement.
This weekend’s events are significant as they represent one of the largest competitive outings for Tulane during the outdoor season. The results could impact national rankings and prepare the team for upcoming championship events.
Part of the team will travel west to Azusa, California, where they will participate in the three-day Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific at Cougar Stadium. Events begin Thursday morning with distance races at 9:00 a.m. Central Time, followed by evening sessions starting at 7:10 p.m. The meet continues through Saturday with additional distance and field events each day. Live results are available online, and FloTrack is providing streaming coverage.
Meanwhile, another group from Tulane will compete in Houston at the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational held at Carl Lewis International Complex. This two-day event starts Friday afternoon with field events at 12:30 p.m., followed by running races later that day. Saturday’s schedule includes more field competitions beginning at 10:30 a.m., while running events start after lunch. Both days can be streamed on YouTube.
In their most recent outing last weekend at the 44 Farms Team Invitational in College Station, Texas, Cara Salsberry set a new program record in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.22 meters. Maria Alduan secured an individual victory in the women’s 800-meter race with a time of 2:15.21.
Several Tulane athletes currently hold top national marks based on performances earlier this season; Silas Kiptanui is ranked second nationally in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase after clocking an 8:29.21 finish during Raleigh Relays competition. On the women’s side, Blezzin Kimutai stands thirty-ninth nationwide for her time of 15:54.81 in the Raleigh Relays’ five-thousand meter event; Alex Sharp ranks fiftieth nationally for her steeplechase performance (10:29.91), while Sofie Groeninger sits forty-third overall following her heptathlon total from last week’s invitational.
With only two weekends remaining before conference championships begin, these meets offer critical preparation opportunities as athletes look ahead to next week’s LSU Alumni Gold event.
