Tulane University’s women’s basketball team was defeated by Rice University 70-60 on Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. The Green Wave, now with an 8-11 overall record and 3-4 in the American Athletic Conference, were down by three points at halftime but struggled in the third quarter and could not recover in the fourth.

Rice improved to 17-3 overall and remains undefeated (7-0) in conference play. Rice outshot Tulane with a field goal percentage of 43.5% compared to Tulane’s 36.7%. The Owls also made two more three-pointers than Tulane, finishing with six to Tulane’s four. Although Tulane outrebounded Rice 42-32—including a 13-6 edge on offensive rebounds—the Owls recorded more assists (17 to Tulane’s seven), doubled the number of blocks (six to three), and forced six more turnovers. Those turnovers resulted in a significant advantage for Rice, who scored 22 points off turnovers compared to just four for Tulane.

Kanija Daniel led Tulane with 17 points, along with three rebounds, one steal, and one block—marking her seventh consecutive game with a blocked shot. Kendall Sneed contributed 12 points and led the team with six rebounds while adding two assists and two steals. Amira Mabry scored 11 points and collected five rebounds; all three players had one block each.

Five members of the Green Wave secured at least five rebounds apiece: Sneed led, followed by Mabry, Mecailin Marshall, Dyllan Hanna, and Shiloh Kimpson—whose five boards set a new career high for the freshman. Kimpson also dished out three assists to lead the team.

The first quarter saw both teams exchanging baskets before ending tied at 24 after Kanija Daniel hit a three-pointer as time expired. In the second quarter, both teams traded leads until Rice went on a run late in the half to secure a narrow advantage at intermission.

After halftime, Rice extended its lead through a decisive third-quarter run that put them ahead by double digits. Though Jayda Brown broke up Rice’s scoring streak for Tulane late in that period, entering the fourth quarter trailing by eight proved too much for the Green Wave.

In the final frame, Rice maintained control as their defense limited Tulane’s scoring opportunities until late free throws from CC Mays broke up another scoreless stretch for Tulane. Despite continued efforts—including another late three-pointer from Daniel—the Green Wave could not close the gap.

Tulane will continue its road trip against Memphis on Tuesday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m., with coverage available via ESPN+.
