NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today issued the following statement on the Louisiana Legislative Special Session.
"I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our Orleans Delegation for their attention to legislative matters and for representing the interest of our people on the State level," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
"This special session should be an opportunity to collaborate on best practices and to address crime across our state. Instead, we have concerns that much of the proposed legislation does not effectively address crime at its root causes and could impact how we go about our everyday lives.
It is imperative to recognize that these proposals will set our city back from the progress we have made in reducing crime and can put our residents, visitors and all law enforcement personnel at further risk. The fact remains that the City of New Orleans has been and continues to be trending in the right direction. This is because we know that public safety is a matter of public health, which is why we take a holistic, collaborative approach, with all partners at the table. My administration will continue working with the New Orleans Police Department, State officials, community partners and all stakeholders to ensure we are enacting the best solutions to keep our people safe."
