A New Orleans resident, Brandon Alexander, 37, has been indicted on multiple federal charges related to drugs and firearms. The indictment was announced by United States Attorney Duane A. Evans on October 10, 2024. Alexander faces charges under the Federal Controlled Substances and Gun Control Acts.

The charges against Alexander include possession with intent to distribute heroin and buprenorphine (Suboxone), a violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), 841(b)(1)(C), and (b)(1)(E). He is also charged with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime under Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A)(i). Additional charges include being a felon in possession of a firearm and receipt of a firearm while under felony information.

The potential penalties for these charges are significant. Count one carries up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $1 million. Count two mandates a minimum five-year sentence that must run consecutively with other sentences, with fines up to $250,000. Counts three and four carry maximum sentences of 15 years and five years respectively, each with potential fines up to $250,000.

Court records reveal that on August 30, 2024, Alexander possessed heroin and Suboxone with the intent to distribute them. He also had a Glock Model 20 pistol during this time. Due to prior felony convictions and pending aggravated assault charges in the 22nd Judicial District Court, he is prohibited from possessing or receiving firearms.

U.S. Attorney Evans emphasized that an indictment is merely an accusation and guilt must be established beyond reasonable doubt.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime through community cooperation and strategic law enforcement efforts. The Department launched an enhanced strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations along with the Louisiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman from the Violent Crime Unit is handling the prosecution.
