U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced the indictment of Maria Dinora Portillo-Alfaro, a 36-year-old Honduran national, for the misuse of a social security number to gain employment. The indictment was filed on December 19, 2024, and alleges that Portillo-Alfaro falsely represented a social security number not assigned to her on or about December 10, 2022, in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

If found guilty, Portillo-Alfaro could face up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Additionally, there is a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

Evans emphasized that an indictment is merely an accusation and that guilt must be established beyond a reasonable doubt. He acknowledged the efforts of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Removal Office and Homeland Security Investigations in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution.
