Pharma

There were 55,015 deaths caused by either the flu or pneumonia in the U.S. during the 41st week of 2020, accounting for 7.9% of all U.S. deaths during the week.

In the same week of 2019, there were 55,874 deaths caused by either the flu or pneumonia, 1.6% more than 2020.

The data used in this story was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC establishes seasonal baselines on what they expect to see in regards to deaths in a given week. For the week ending October 10, the seasonal baseline was 11.5%, meaning that the week was below the seasonal baseline.

There is an influenza division of the CDC whose responsibility it is to keep track of influenza activity year round. This group compiles and analyzes known cases in order to help states and local governments respond accordingly. Figures can change and counts can be adjusted as new information is learned from each case.
