New Orleans Recreation Development to Host Annual Halloween Events for Youth and Families

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission invites residents to celebrate Halloween at its annual Rec Center Spooktaculars, Haunted House on the Greenway and inaugural Monster Mile Walk & Run. Events begin Friday, Oct. 27 and run through Halloween on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at various NORD locations across the city. All events are free and open to the public. 

This year will be NORD’s second year hosting a haunted house on the Lafitte Greenway. The haunted house opens during the following three days: Friday, Oct. 27, Saturday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Brake Tag Station (600 N. Norman C. Francis Parkway). Costumes are encouraged, and the haunted house experience is free and open to all ages.  

The inaugural Monster Mile Walk & Run is for ages 5-17 and will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on the Lafitte Greenway. The one-mile walk/run will begin and end at the Brake Tag Station, with a celebration for all participants immediately after. All participants must register by visiting www.nordc.org. Participants will receive a free T-shirt and treat bag.  

NORD's Annual Spooktacular events will feature spooky and whimsical decorations, goodies from community partners and trick-or-treat candy for the youth at the following NORD locations: 

  • Cut Off Park, 6600 Belgrade St. on the Westbank  
  • Joe W. Brown Park, 5601 Read Blvd. in New Orleans East  
  • Lafitte Greenway, 2200 Lafitte Ave.  
Costumes are encouraged. In addition to the Spooktacular events, all NORD recreation centers will pass out trick-or-treat candy to neighborhood youth. All activities are free to the public and will take place on Halloween night, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
