Cost of college went up for all students at Southern University at New Orleans

In-state tuition and fees rose 9.5 percent for 2018-19 at Southern University at New Orleans, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Louisiana residents paid $7,033 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $612 more than the $6,421 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 126.6 percent more than residents this year, or $15,934. Their price tag grew 4 percent from $15,322 in 2017-18.

About 93 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Louisiana residents. About 4 percent are residents of other states and 3 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 93 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 174 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.2 million and 110 students took out student loans totaling more than $589,258.

Including all undergraduates (2,356), 1,671 students used grants or scholarships totaling $20.2 million, and 1,412 students took out $11.8 million in federal student loans.
